Offering a unique approach to educating young children with ADD, ADHD, Asperger's and related conditions...

The gift of the child with ADHD

  • Energy, lots of energy.
  • Ability to see things most of us miss.
  • Intense focus when interest is sparked.
  • Curiosity and creativity.
  • Able to think differently and see differently.

The gift of a school for children with ADHD

  • The child with ADHD is appreciated for who he or she is, and the child feels it.
  • The child realizes that he or she is not alone; that there really are a lot of children like him or her.
  • Instruction matches the way the child with ADHD thinks and perceives his or her world.
  • The whole child is taken into consideration and not just the brain.
  • Teachers are vibrant and energetic, and love the energy of the child with ADHD.

Girls are Welcomed at the Hunter School!

Residential and day program for boys and girls aged 5-15 years

For the past ten years, the Hunter school has quietly been addressing the academic, behavioral and emotional needs of young children through our unique and highly effective programs.

Understanding how these children perceive and process information is an integral part of our program.

Our comprehensive behavioral plan gives each student the opportunity to understand their individual structure, boundaries, behaviors and to make their differences work for them in a positive way.

Hunter’s holistic approach includes educating and nurturing the whole child.

We see strengths that may not be readily visible to others and work to help them emerge.

Our philosophy of non-violence includes a nutritious vegetarian diet and a limit of electronic devices on campus.

If you wish to learn more about the Hunter learning experience, schedule an appointment or set up a campus visit, please call Laurie Ferris at (603) 786-9427 ext. 26.

Hunter Offers Transportation Services for Day and Residential Students

The Hunter School is now certified and licensed by the State of New Hampshire Pupil Transportation Program to transport students to and from the school.

Located 15 minutes from the village of Rumney on Stinson Lake, the Hunter School responded to the need and requests by several New Hampshire school districts to provide affordable transportation for their students.

We are pleased to be able to offer this service to school districts within approximately a one hour distance from our campus.

In many cases, we are also able to provide transportation services for our residential students throughout New Hampshire to go home on the weekends and holiday breaks. We also transport students who live across the country to airports when necessary to allow for travel home throughout the year during extended breaks.

Please call (603) 786-9427 for more information.

Mission Statement

The Hunter school is a private day and boarding school for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through eighth grades, with Attention Deficit Disorder (with or without hyperactivity), Aspergers , learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral difficulties and other co-occurring conditions, who have not found success in more traditional educational settings.

The mission of our school is to give students with social and emotional difficulties, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and hyperactive students (ADHD), who may be coded or not coded in special education, a strong sense of dignity, self-esteem, and self-respect for themselves and others. Our goals are to help the students become aware of their strengths to provide them with strategies, support, and networks necessary for them to succeed. This school is designed to develop, in the students, a sense of citizenship, character, honesty, and ethics, both in the school and in the community environment, while providing a good academic background.

A History of Helping Children...

In 1979, Thom and Louise Hartmann founded the New England Salem Children’s Trust (NESCT) in New Hampshire, and continued to spread the Salem message of peace and environmental respect Since that time, NESCT has served over 250 children in Rumney and the village continues to be a leader in treating children with behavioral challenges.

Hartmann also introduced the theory of hunters and farmers in his groundbreaking book, "Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception", first published in the early 1990's.

The theory of ADHD children is the idea that they are the "hunters" who are able to take in continuous stimuli and react quickly to changing circumstances. Whereas, non-ADHD children are the "farmers" who are patient, methodical, and focused over long periods of time.  Unfortunately for ADHD children, traditional schools teach for the patient "farmers", and not the alert and quick reacting "hunters."

In 1998,in order to provide these children with quality educational opportunities, the New England Salem Children's Trust established The Hunter School.

2009 ESY Program Another Success!

Our ESY Summer Program is designed to provide learning experiences in an enjoyable and fun environment. Three mornings a week there are classes to increase proficiency in language arts, math and other core subjects.

Opportunities to learn and practice “real world” life skills in a safe, consistent and supportive environment are embedded in all extra curricular activities, including water sports from our private beach on Stinson Lake. While providing a well-rounded education and behavior modification, we strive to instill in the student a sense of discipline, citizenship, character, honesty and ethics.

This summer, students attended our program from all over the country including Arizona, Ohio, and Maryland. We’re already looking forward to next year’s program, to begin on July 12, 2010!

Field trips included:

Hiking Mt. Cardigan, Greely Ponds, Stinson Mt., Riding the Cog Railway, Ruggles Mines, Echo Lake and Whales’ Tails Water Park!

New Website Unveiled...

For the past several months, we have been in the process of redesigning our website to have more information available online. Our new website has several exciting features including the finalization of a program where parents can log-in on to a personal page where they can view their child’s schoolwork, artwork and report cards. Educational professionals can access admissions paperwork online, and will find links to a comprehensive school calendar, student handbook and more…
